If you still want local organic veggies from Jose, he’ll be at his commercial plot at Marra Farm every Saturday while the veggies are still growing. You can come meet him there, he’ll pick it fresh right then for you. See him on Saturdays 10am – 2pm. On Sept. 18th he’ll be selling at Fiestas Patrias however at the community center in SP. Matter of fact a bunch of the market folks will be there at the fiesta.

It is with great honor I have had the chance to work on marketing for the market. I have learned a ton about markets, food permits, and what great neighbors I have. I have made some good friends. But I didn’t learn a lick of Spanish even with sitting through so many meetings. Whatup. Oh well. Thanks for the opportunity to work with you all. If you are from outside South Park or even in SP and want to to sell your wares at the market, come at 9am with $10 for your space rental. Bring your own tables and canopy. No electricity is available.

Please join us promptly at 7pm. Rosa will lead the meeting in Spanish and there will be an intrepetator for us English speaking folks (I love this about our market).

So I hear we had 21 vendors this time. Or something like that. food, services, clothing, jewelry, ice cream, veggies, and massage. But they also brought in a bouncy house for the kids to play in for free while parents shopped. And there were boxing demonstrations as well.

It’s never a dull moment in South Park and why should the market be any different. So our next market is August 14th. You should just come for the day. Start with coffee. Get your brakes fixed or that new set of tires, shop the market, mingle with and in our community, walk down to the river and look for the resident otter, grab dinner and stay for our outdoor cinema. The movie events start at 8:30pm and the movie title that night will be “Where the Wild Things Are”. Admission is free, bring the family and friends, join us for a small town feeling, down to earth, day in Seattle. If you want, bring a can food donation for the local food bank.

And with the flea market part there is word of used tools, hardware, clothing and more.

Rumor has it Full Tilt will be back so come back sure you snag yourself a Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream bar…yummy!

See at Napoli’s between 10am and 4 pm on Saturday, July 31st. Grab a coffee, eat some good food at our neighboring restaurants, and maybe even have your brakes changed at the Tire Store while you shop.

The market is smaller at this point than last year, but we are still trying hard to make it great. Come join us on July 31st for our next one. We’ve lowered the stall rental price so more folks can hopefully make more money. Did you see those orange cowboy boots? Wow!

This time I only had a $1.25 in my pocket so I didn’t get to really buy much at all, but I did get loaded up with some wonderful freshly picked sweet basil for a buck. What a treat to be able to go home that night and make a big batch of pesto, so fresh and so good. Thanks Jose for planting sweet basil.

Colleen, those hats you are making are so cute. If you have not been down to see Colleen’s art, you have to. Artful clothing and she has these great new hats and more she has been making. She also said she is starting to make baby blankets…and oh are they soft.

And hello, who never told me that Uncle Woody’s popcorn was located in South Park. How cool to have a local manufacturer join our market.

Please come support our market and also the great businesses we have that surround the area. Because of the bridge closure, we could sure all use some extra foot traffic our way.

There were concerns brought up about safety and street closures, businesses being blocked or not accessed by the market’s location this year and some of the products conflicting. But with that Napoli’s said we could talk about using their parking lot. And can you believe this, they are going to allow us to use it for free to make sure our market gets to be open this coming Saturday. We’ll pitch in some some electricity, restroom facility use etc. But this is amazing. Here is a business feeling the effects of a bridge closure and a depressed economy and yet they are stepping up to come up with workable solutions that allow the folks with small market vendor booths have a chance to try and make their small businesses hopefully stand a chance.

So now we wait to find out what the Mayor says about the street closure and the location. Apparently he has the final say. In the meantime, I am applauding Napoli’s for being such a great neighbor.

So one way or the other the market will happen at the corner of 14th and Cloverdale…we are just not exactly sure yet as to where.

In the meantime, please frequent South Park businesses whenever you can afford to. We are all in this together. The bridge closure is affecting all of us. Let’s pull together and help one another.

If you came, you saw 13 vendors, a smaller group, but a good group. On my partner and my limited budget, we managed to be entertained and come home with some nice stuff. I think we had $25 collectively between the two of us. I had a hot link and Elizabeth had a Field Roast dog from Mama Juanita’s. Good stuff with all the fixin’s.

I got a birthday gift for my best friends 1 year old. It’s the cutest little handmade stuffed octypus made from a recycled striped sweater. I think Colleen said her daughter designed them and she sewed them. It is super soft and adorable.

From Jose, of course, we bought organic broccoli and fresh cilantro. We bought some limes, onions and freshly made tamales from Maria to take home.

There was Tupperware for sale, so we got a couple items out of the discount bin, jewelry, rosaries, flea market stuff, clothes, cowboy boots, and more.

I can’t forget Alex, who is the guy to see for insurance, tax help and immigration assistance.

Mix all that with lots of good neighbors, laughter, cute dogs fun kids and it was a good day in the hood. On the walk back home, a neighbor gives us kale, lettuce, carrots and onions from her organic garden.

The South Park Market on Wheels is the most laid back friendly market I’ve ever been to. I caught the tail end of some good music. Wished I had gotten their earlier.

All in all, it was a quiet day, an intimate crowd, but fun for those who came. Hope we see you next time on July 17th.
